Too Much to Absorb

A better person than I can parse and understandthe confounding nature of our world, how we arrive at a multitude of decisions as a disjointed group of politicians handle affairs of our nation from a position of power, personal goals, anger, and disassociation from a particular item of high importance to the people for whom they represent.

It is my belief that our government handlers are anything but centered to their life-long political biases and hatred for their counter-parts, many so paralyzed by their animosity they would deny their nation responsible representation.

An Appalachian transplant, who am I to have such thoughts?

I saw it at recess on the grounds of my elementary and high schools, in the classrooms, in the halls stalked by bullies… Unlike today, we young people were taught ‘Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic’ so we were spared today’s wide-spread indoctrination of blame, of how and who to hate for society’s slide into racial issues, kept alive and more viable to our youth by an almighty ‘National Association of Teachers Union’.

Okay, sure, we must allow for environmental differences, low IQs, high IQs, parental inability to carefully cultivate and fine-tune tolerance and care for a multitude of beliefs. We are built in our early years and that inculcation en masse make for the world we build.

So, we migrate, spread our selective fine-tuning to other cities, other countries, and the centuries roll on with our human sacrifices, wars, famine, and ultimate destruction and re-building…until!

What?

Our ‘Religions’ speak in different tongues, views that see ‘life and death, heaven, hell’ in totally sharp contrast…

Life goes on.

Death goes on.

Zealots go on.

Will freedom and liberty go on?

Can love conquer all?

Can a ‘Cosmic Wave’ pass over the world, instilling in each of us a predominant theme for living?

Does this ‘Cosmic Wave’ erase all of the frailties of the world?

Does Jesus return to make all things right?

Does another planet in another Solar System come to create a true Eloi?

Are we a ‘Lab Experiment’ that has gone wildly awry?

There is so much good in the world – can it not be an unbreakable bond for humanity?

Killing Machines

Actress Brutally Murdered! Unsolved in Phoenix, Arizona

Killing Machines?

BR Chitwood

*

Not so fast!

Killing someone with a gun, hammer, fists, eyes blazing with sadistic, satanic glee must be the most despicable human trait. Yet, somehow, in a hostile war between countries, our warriors are trained to blow their enemies to bloody fragments in many number of ways, and, in the process, find reason to celebrate their victories…it is the essential nature of the warriors – their training includes film, hand-to-hand combat, all numbers of ways to destroy their enemies.

Most of us cannot fathom the beasts within those of us who hate so fervently and vindictively that we cannot control the terrible urges that possess us. Real war builds those elements within us, particularly those of us who live a sheltered life in our religious groups and our private ways of life.

Being a veteran of one of our wars and having lived up close and personally with a good lady friend of my wife and me. That lovely young lady was a secretary for two attorney friends of mine, an actress/model who shared living quarters with my wife briefly before our marriage.

During one record-hot summer day of a Phoenix, Arizona August evening this lovely lady was savagely murdered in the Northeast desert of Phoenix and left there by the killer for two record-heat weeks to be ravaged by desert denizens and her body unrecognizable… She was found by two terrified young boys during their rock-hunting hobby and rushed to tell police of their find.

My wife, I, and friends of this lady were devastated with the news and mad as hell when we were finally told by the newspapers of the method of her murder. The killer’s method of murdering her, the newspaper told us…the bastard dragged her through the desert, stopping every few yards to slam large rocks down upon her head. The case is now closed, and the beast is still out there somewhere, his crime unsolved.

This case, so far as I know, is still an ‘Unsolved Closed Case’ in the Phoenix PD files. Please, if you have any information about this case, please contact the Phoenix Police Department. Thank you…

Being an author, I ultimately wrote a fictional novel of my friend’s homicide, using library microfiche for the only facts available about the case. That book became the first book of my ‘Bailey Crane Six-Book Mystery Series’. The title of the book: “An Arizona Tragedy – A Bailey Crane Mystery” (Book 1). You can find it on Amazon or the ‘buy site’ at my blogsite/Website:

The Prince of Darkness

The Prince of Darkness

BR Chitwood

*

‘The Madness Monster’, or, some might call ‘The Prince of Darkness’, has arrived to lead our ‘Land of the Free’ and ‘Home of the Brave’ closer to its ‘Final Breaths of Freedom’. The Bible – particularly, The New Testament, and a Scottish Professor predicted a sad and lonely demise of our great Democracy, and there are some clear signs that our country is well underway to collapse around us. At least, early stages appear evident.

Our United States Constitution began to form when a group of people arrived on our shores from England and other latitudes, people who envisioned a country that would be a Democratic Republic where Freedom and the crude idea that everyone was created equal by their Maker, that laws and documents could be devised to protect those who lived by the dictates of those laws and documents.

So, a group of very special Patriots fought relentlessly to protect the gains from their labor, to untie the tight bonds from their former unwieldy ‘Monarchal Rule’.

The Great Experiment (Democracy) began and would last for years amid Political Chicanery, Slavery Struggles, questionable leaders, and wars.

I love our country, its majesty and territorial options – oceans, mountains, prairies, deserts, and I understand that all our citizens are not in ‘lock-step’ with many political views and mandates. Still, I worry about our choices of leadership, particularly those who have reached levels of senility, corruption, and questionable choices.

There are times when my mind takes me to the gray areas of thought. Can we all think so differently that we exchange a leadership that has positive momentum, logical criteria for options of healthy growth, solutions to pressing problems, positive avenues of further innovation and hope and promise for our people.

My mind also recognizes that we are ‘where we are’ and we must live within the framework of some illogical conditions. My mind also reminds me that there is so much I do not know about the dark shadows which our government puts before us.

In short, our founding fathers gave us golden words of suggestion on how to create a ‘perfect union’. What my mind unfortunately perceives is that our lovely America has fallen to greed and unprincipled actors in our government, more interested in their own personal gains than in staying true to the principles of our finely-tuned ‘Constitution of the United States’.

There is no need for me to dwell on ‘The Prince of Darkness’ – (our good people are not so blind as not to see of whom I write) – the clarity of all I would write here is seen daily in those journals who print the truth and the Cable News Networks who tell us the unvarnished truths that mock us each day.

I have nothing but my words to utter…useless though they might be.

Hope, however, still dwells within this aging body that somehow, some day soon, we will awaken to the principles that can never fail us – that is, ‘Truth’ in Action and Deeds as revealed in our revered documents which were forged in the struggles and blood of our heroes during the most noble battles that forged the ‘Constitution of the United States’!

Mistakes, Sins, and Other Lies

Fun Scribbles!

Mistakes, Sins, and Other Lies

BR Chitwood

Where be the truths of all life’s ventures?

Through all the years in trespassing history

Are the arcane mutterings of fools and geniuses…

It is we who must find the true and false meanings

Of the lives we are living, the awkward moves we make,

The effects of the words we say and the steps we take…

It is we who are the final arbiters of our living.

It is we who determine the good and the bad moves we make,

The decisions, good and bad, that determine our ultimate fates.

*

We read our Bible and books of ‘Ancient philosophers’.

We study in classrooms, listen to teachers, respected professors

Whom we expect to know the answers to all our questions or

Will refer us to others who might possess knowledge we want.

We choose our paths to wander and discover, only to question

Our wisdom of the choice. So many will find satisfaction with

The direction they’ve taken and will stay the course to success

And a chosen career that makes them happy, feeling they have

Arrived at their special place of comfort and success.

*

Others who have not the positive experiences, those who wander in

And out of choices because of low mental acuity and/or a lack of

Ambition, curiosity, and drive…it is from this aggregate that most of

Society’s problems arise, not to say problems do not come from the

Former…or, from our elite group of Politicians, all seemingly coming

From the field of Law and order, the Military – and, a few those from

The business ranks find politics to their liking. For the most part, this

Latter group does wish to perform their duties honestly for the good of

Their particular constituencies and/or for noble reasons.

*

Then, there is Joe Biden!

Consider him, unwise and wobbly.

*

Then, there is EYE!

A ‘Romantic’ all my life – a member of a group who should ‘rule the world’… Or, NOT!

Tacit Tenderness

Tacit Tenderness

BR Chitwood

*

There are times when a sincere warm smile is not enough to give someone a ‘lift’, a short reprieve from loneliness, a heart cracked with a ‘Dear John’ letter, a lingering love spat, a disappointing job interview.

Tacit Tenderness needs some helpful tactile accompaniment, an embrace with emotional encouragement for that ‘Dear John’ letter and/or consoling words to bring some semblance of understanding and reassurance to help the grieving person under stress.

So, why do I write about ‘tacit tenderness’?

There is not just one reason…

Consider the events that have bruised severely our country, our Democracy, our freedom and liberty, our sacred United States Constitution (likely a document more carefully crafted by the heroic leaders of our earlier days as a nation than any other documents in any other country.

You have your political party allegiance, and, for the most part you follow their dictates. For me, I am unashamedly irritated with our country’s ‘rank and file’ for the unmerciful reign of terror, fires, thefts, murders, beatings, stores robbed with all of it recorded on our television screens.

Sorry, the major irritation for me is our nation’s leader and his Vice-President, two people to whom history will show as our most arrogant, outrageously inept, useless, withered, without clues as to how to govern and how to keep our great Republic safe and secure…despite some speeches that are written for them, speeches that have a democratic feel, have a somewhat promising flavor, until the next week’s government news and events come to our TV screens.

Please forgive my continuing amateurish and one-sided railing about the state of our government and the people who are the brain-trust and keepers of our sacred documents. If only these wise and valuable documents and their contents were adhered to up and down the great halls of these hallowed structures, we might truly be a democratic Republic. Our leaders take sacred vows to govern and abide by these documents. The obligatory acceptances are always hearty ‘I Dos!

Money is the power broker, billions of dollars spent by the big conglomerates to get ‘this bill’ and ‘that bill’ passed, whether those enactments have negative results for the people who must live within the constructs of those bills.

In short, our elected come to office for honest appraisals of the issues that come before them, to wit, ‘does the issue up for vote benefit the people they represent’?

It is not my intent to insult anyone. I’m only lamenting, surely venting some of my own concerns, simply expressing my angst and fear of where we might be going in this country… We are wrestling with some monumental problems: Health CrisesCovid-19 virus, Omicron and other variants; Crime out of control openly in stores; fires;  murder of innocents; border madness –  illegal entry at our southern borders by hundreds of thousands and more coming each day; airline fights;   congressional wrangling by a disassembled congress (an ultimate struggle for our freedom of choice versus an ‘open and progressive’ society with free college education, free medical support, forgiveness of college/university debts, open borders, short, or, no prison sentences for criminal pursuits), and much more from the left side of our political spectrum.

Where are we going as a nation?

Forget Democrat!

Forget Republican!

We are people of different persuasions, but it would seem to me that all of us want some semblance, some balance, in our political structure. It would seem to me that many of us lost loved ones in the wars we have fought – my uncle Charles was at Hickam Field during the infamous Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor, Honolulu…thousands of lives lost, and, in the end millions of lives were lost.

If there are those who do not like my observations about our government and about our history, you won’t be reading more from this point on. I’m a old ‘country boy’ and I understand we all do not think alike. For me, these at times combative post remarks make me think that, at least ‘I’m not hiding behind a boulder, and people can know how I feel about the state of our union – and other topics that can rankle a few folks. I’m a guy who likes people, regardless of their beliefs and color. So, I am just expressing my personal views

Some might like them (the views.)

Some might just as easily not like them.’

At least, I wrote something this Saturday before turning on the ‘Sentry Golf Tournament in Hawaii’…

Oh, I will continue to write until I’m claimed by my God, and maybe that does not upset anyone…

BR Chitwood – Warts and All

BR Chitwood (Author) – Warts and All!

December 19, 2021

*

I’ve written over twenty books, over 375 blog posts, short stories, flash fiction, and poetry, all found on my website and blog: https://brchitwood.com.

The books cover most genres, some crime novels depict the author’s factual accounts with some fiction to enrich the drama. There are romance novels, a ‘Bailey Crane’ six-book mystery series, some of which inspired by true events, one science-fiction novel, memoirs that perhaps tells too much about the author’s life.

THE CRACKED MIRROR – Reflections of an Appalachian Son is a narrative about my life, and I use a character – Prentice Paul Hiller – to depict me. In this memoir I use a two-track system for conveying the action taking place: PP Hiller (me) on a ‘Nursing Home’ track, PLUS a track that covers my life. I believe the reader will find THE CRACKED MIRROR an excellent read…of course, my selfish-side believes all my books are excellent.

In my Website – https://brchitwood.com – you will find all my books with cover pics, synopses, and Amazon Buy Sites.

The Cracked Mirror – Reflections of an Appalachian Son

(A fictional memoir – 90% + TRUE)

BR Chitwood

About a Tennessee boy who ate some emotional soup and spent a lifetime trying to digest it. It is the story of a young man leaving east Tennessee and going in search of himself, unprepared for the adult world he is about to enter. Behind him, and, within him, is the emotional debris of his childhood: abuse, broken family, and a substantial part of his soul. Searching for his identity in isms and bars, he stumbles, gets up, only to find in the end that legacy and meaning are elusive, a ‘white buffalo’ always somewhere in the shadows.

“The Cracked Mirror – Reflections of an Appalachian Son” is largely a true story of the author’s own life, a mirror of his past, cracked with the stress of all his memories: a family broken apart by their Appalachian circumstances and the ‘great depression’; a childhood tainted by a father’s abusive nature; an impetuous marriage and a sorrowful divorce; a subsequent search of ‘isms,’ for love and meaning in California and Arizona gin mills; a tableau of horrible events, including a senseless family murder, suicide, and a desert survival.

“The Cracked Mirror – Reflections of an Appalachian Son,” is the story of fictional Prentice Paul Hiller (Billy R. Chitwood) his life, his heritage, his mistakes, the events that have come to shape him, and the demons within that he cannot dispel. Along the way, he gives his passionate and provocative views on criminal justice, love, politics, religion, war, and his favorite writers. In the end he finds a new love, some hope for redemption, some semblance of meaning and legacy.

The author’s own family roots trace back to the eleventh century in Chetwode, a lovely hamlet north of London… 5-Star reviews on Amazon.

Cogito Ergo Sum

What is Real?

by

BR Chitwood

*

‘Cogito Ergo Sum’!

You think, therefore, you are!

Or:

‘I think, therefore, I am’!

In the day when Philosophy might have had a more urgent importance and significance, I wonder if Descartes’ singular ‘Cogito’ utterance and treatise would be one of the most recognized phrases in school rooms around the world, particularly those rooms where hungry minds were more inquisitive about their world and their existence in it.

In my Appalachian world of youth, it would never have occurred to me to question my existence…there were enough ‘negatives’ in my early life to keep my mind swirling with confusion and doubts – no intention to gain sympathy, just depicting my early life when our country was going through some ‘trying times’…well, kind of like, NOW!

I can say with certainty that my mind has no problem accepting the fact that I ‘think’ and I ‘exist’! Those days still linger, still bring occasional thought-demons and over-think. Decisions, mistakes have been made in my life, but, overall, there has been happiness and love to offset the bad stuff.

Descartes had some important influence in my college education, made me more aware of my lack of knowledge.

The tiny thesis I am putting forth in this post is that my

problem these days is that I ‘think’ too much in lieu of looking at the beautiful Arizona sky, writing, enjoying life with wife, home, and our wonderful children. So, Descartes brought back to me some simplicity to my life.

Hopefully, I can pass on some of this trivial verbiage to those who can embrace this sequitur nonsense.
